Ronald S. Paik, M.D.

Dr. Ronald Paik is a specialist in the shoulder, elbow, and knee and the field of orthopaedic sports medicine commonly treating sports related injuries. Dr. Paik is regularly selected as a top doctor in the fields of orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine by the Washingtonian magazine, Northern Virginia magazine, Virginia Living magazine, Arlington magazine, and Castle Connolly/Modern Luxury DC magazine. Dr. Paik is commonly sought by patients for consultation and surgery from throughout the DC metro area, nation, and world.

A native of Northern Virginia, Dr. Ronald Paik graduated from the University of Virginia, where he was in the Echols Scholar Honors Program. He received his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he was selected as a National Institutes of Health Summer Research Fellow. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He went on to pursue further fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopy focusing in shoulder, elbow, and knee surgery at the world-renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic, which pioneered the Tommy John surgical procedure for baseball pitchers and is considered one of the pioneer institutions of sports medicine. He is board certified and received the subspecialty certificate in orthopaedic sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Paik continues to be extensively involved in the fields of orthopaedic sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. He serves as Co-Chair of the Self-Assessment Committee for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, which annually writes an examination to ensure orthopaedic sports medicine surgeons are staying up to date with current standards of care. He has been awarded the title of Fellow of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, which is bestowed upon an elite group who have set themselves apart through involvement, education, and advancement in the field of arthroscopic surgery. He serves as an Associate Master Instructor teaching arthroscopic techniques for the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He is on the Editorial Board for Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery, which has been ranked 4th out of 74 journals in the entire field of Orthopaedics. He is a Principal Reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine and is a reviewer for Sports Health and the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine. He has previously served as a team physician for multiple professional and division I college sports teams. He continues to be involved in research, publishing multiple articles and technique videos.

Dr. Paik’s goal is to pursue non-operative treatments, when possible, but he is experienced in advanced arthroscopic procedures, surgical repair and reconstruction, and total joint replacements. Dr. Paik makes it a priority to ensure that his patients are well informed about their conditions and treatment options so that they can make educated decisions.

Drs. Ochiai and Paik recently published editorial commentaries in the September edition of Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery. Drs. Ochiai and Paik both serve on the editorial board for the journal. Arthroscopy is the pre-eminent journal for orthopedic surgeons focusing on arthroscopic procedures.


Dr. Paik was a question reviewer for the recently released 2021 Self Assessment Examination from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Paik was recently appointed as co-chair of the committee responsible for making the examination annually. The examination is designed to help orthopaedic surgeons stay up to date with the current standards of care and advances in the field of sports medicine and surgery.


Dr. Paik has recently been appointed to co-chair of the Self Assessment committee for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). The AOSSM is the premier organization for orthopaedic surgeons who specialize in the care of athletes and the treatment of sports injuries. The Self Assessment committee annually writes an examination to help orthopaedic sports medicine surgeons stay up to date with the current standards of care.
