Nirschl Orthopaedic Center for Sports Medicine & Joint Reconstruction
Nirschl Orthopaedic Center (NOC) and our physical therapy clinic, Virginia Sportsmedicine Institute (VSI) were founded in 1974. We were one of the first sports medicine facilities on the east coast. Our founder, Dr. Robert P. Nirschl, is a renowned innovator and mentor in the field of orthopaedic sports medicine. Dr. Nirschl is internationally known for the development of the Nirschl surgical procedure for elbow tendinosis (tennis and golfer’s elbow). His research of sports techniques resulted in new treatments for tendon injuries of the shoulder, elbow and lower extremities. He has been honored for meritorious service by the Virginia Orthopaedic Society, the Virginia Orthopaedic Community, and Virginia High School Athletics. In 2017 he received the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Alumni Award.
Nirschl Orthopaedic Center has a talented and dedicated staff featuring five of the area’s leading Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Surgeons. The long tradition of Nirschl Orthopaedic Center’s quality care and innovation continues in our clinic today. Our physicians use refined technology for hip arthroscopy, hip preservation surgery, rapid recovery joint replacement, and microvascular hand/wrist surgery. Our orthopaedic surgeons are at the forefront of treating disorders of the hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, and knee and treat a wide variety of patients and injuries. Each patient receives our compassion, care, and understanding. Our physicians have graduated from accredited fellowship training programs for orthopaedic surgeons with a concentration on the treatment of injuries of the hand and wrist, elbow and shoulder, and hip. Many of our surgeons are regularly named as “Top Doctors” in the Northern Virginia and Washingtonian Magazine.
NOC has mentored orthopaedic surgeons for 25 years through the Nirschl Orthopaedic Center Sports Medicine Fellowship program in conjunction with Georgetown University and Virginia Hospital Center. NOC also participated in the development of the United States Military Medical School (USUHS) Family Practice Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. Through this program, NOC has mentored hundreds of medical students, family practice residents, orthopaedic surgery residents, family practice sports medicine fellows and post-graduate orthopedic sports medicine fellows.
At NOC we believe that physical rehabilitation is an integral part of a successful injury recovery plan. Whether it is the primary treatment or follows a surgical procedure. Our physicians work closely with our physical therapy team to design an individualized program so that optimum recovery, return to sports, and pain free activities are achieved as quickly as possible.
Drs. Robert Nirschl, Derek Ochiai, Ronald Paik, Cassie Root, Clay Wellborn, and Matthew Buchanan welcome the opportunity to participate in your care.
