Treatment for Ganglion Cysts in Arlington, VA
Ganglion cysts are small sacs of gel-like fluid that can form along a tendon or joint in a hand or wrist. These benign masses typically develop on the palm side of a wrist, on the end joint of a finger, or at the base of a finger. While the causes remain unclear, some medical professionals believe ganglion cysts may result from joint trauma or a defect in a tendon sheath or joint capsule that causes the tissue to protrude outward.
What Are the Symptoms of a Ganglion Cyst?
Ganglion cysts may appear suddenly, come and go, or develop gradually over time. In some cases, they do not cause any pain or other problems. If a cyst is painful, the discomfort usually worsens with joint movement. Additionally, if a cyst is attached to a tendon, it may cause hand or wrist weakness.
To diagnose a ganglion cyst, a physician will typically perform a physical examination and an imaging test, such as an ultrasound. Ultrasound images can help a physician determine whether a cyst is solid or fluid-filled and whether it involves a blood vessel or artery.
How Are Ganglion Cysts Treated?
Sometimes, ganglion cysts disappear spontaneously without medical intervention. If treatment becomes necessary, a physician may perform a needle aspiration, which involves the use of a syringe to drain fluid from the cyst. After aspiration, a steroid compound is injected into the empty cyst and a splint is placed to immobilize the area as it heals. If a ganglion cyst becomes very painful, interferes with daily activities, or causes hand or finger numbness, a physician may suggest surgery to remove the cyst.
