Dr. Buchanan has extensive experience treating foot and ankle injuries, fractures, and broken bones. Due to the complexity of the anatomy in the foot and ankle, fractures are easily missed. Dr. Buchanan frequently repeats X rays using advanced imaging techniques to avoid missing foot and ankle fractures. Buchanan may order an MRI or CT scan to assess details not evaluated with traditional X rays.

Dr. Buchanan also has several “secret weapons” to speed bone healing. Ask him for a copy of his “Nutrition for Bone Healing” handout!

Although most of the foot and ankle injuries and broken bones can be successfully treated without surgery, a small subset of these injuries require surgery. If surgery is indicated, Dr. Buchanan has extensive experience using minimally invasive surgical techniques which use small incisions and result in less complications and decreased pain.

Patient Testimonials

In the end of May 2020, I unfortunately jumped off my truck tailgate and broke my right ankle in 3 places. My wife being a nurse, did some research and Dr Buchanan’s name came up several times as the ‘go to man’ for ankle surgery. I am an active man who loves to hike, camp and spend time with my grandson. Dr Buchanan’s skill and bedside manner instills trust and I trusted him to get me back to my best! Dr Buchanan told me I would be in a boot by 2 weeks and ankle brace by 6 weeks post surgery and due to his surgical skill, I was. My PT therapist has been very impressed with the speed of my recovery which I believe is a result of Dr Buchanan’s skill and knowledge.

He is kind, funny, and all around nice guy!

Thank you Dr Buchanan!

– Dave

Dr. Buchanan,

When the x-rays indicated that I had a broken foot, I was really bummed. The thought of having to live with the inconvenience of walking with crutches was downright depressing! Your genuine caring and encouragement really helped me to make the best of it. Thank you for your enthusiasm and sincere interest. You helped me recover the “spring in my step.”

Dear Dr. Buchanan,

I just wanted to thank you for all you have done for me! I have been thanking the Lord every day that I can walk again and do most of the things I used to do before my accident. It came to me that you should be thanked, too!! After all, you were the one that put this foot back together again!! So again, thank you for all your hard work and all the years it took you to become the Dr. you are today. May the Lord bless you and yours.

Sincerely,
Gail L

Dear Dr. Buchanan,

One year ago today, I sustained a spiral fracture to my tibia. At the time, it was a life-changing event, especially because I had never broken a bone before. But I was lucky enough to find you and thanks to your surgical skills, it’s nothing more than a distant memory. I’m happy to report I’m better than 100%. So, I want to say, “Thank You”!

Best,
Travis G

Dr. Buchanan,

I do not know whether you remember operating on me, or not. It was March 21, 2006 when you inserted a rod into my leg after multiple fractures of my tibia and fibula. At the time you told me and my uncle Herb (who is also an orthopedic surgeon) that it was one of the worst injured legs you had seen. Well, its 13 years later and I was thinking about the wonders of ortho surgery. I just wanted to tell you that I had a very rapid recovery and was biking four months later. I resumed skiing the next year when I returned to Vail to complete my run. As you suggested I no longer race and avoid ungroomed slopes. I am now 68 years old, and still skiing and biking. Two summers ago, I completed a 52-mile bike ride and this January I skied the Alps in Italy. All this was because of how well you operated on me. I had rehab back home near Chicago, and for a while, at least, they were using my x-rays in lectures at Northwestern Med. Once again, thanks for what you did for me.
