Hip dysplasia occurs when the hip socket (acetabulum) is too shallow to fully support the ball of the thigh bone (femoral head), allowing the ball to slip partially or completely out of its socket during movement. Additionally, the weight supported by the hip is distributed over a smaller surface, creating an excessive load on the rim of the hip socket. Eventually, the added load can cause the joint’s cushioning cartilage lining to break down.

Hip dysplasia is a progressive condition that worsens with time. In many cases, it is present at birth but does not become apparent until pain and other symptoms develop in adulthood. An early diagnosis is essential to achieve the best possible outcome; if left unaddressed, the damage can lead to early-onset osteoarthritis, joint instability, hip labral tears and hip joint dislocation.

What Are the Signs of Hip Dysplasia?

The early symptoms of hip dysplasia can include:

  • Pain in the hip or groin that worsens with activity
  • A snapping or catching sensation in the hip during movement
  • Loss of hip joint range of motion
  • A limp
  • Unequal leg lengths

If hip dysplasia is suspected based on the symptoms, the diagnosis can usually be confirmed with a physical examination and imaging studies, such as X-rays, CT scans and/or ultrasounds.
