Hip Preservation Surgery Performed in Arlington, VA
Hip preservation is a rapidly evolving group of orthopedic surgical techniques designed to improve the movement of the natural hip joint, allowing a broad range of patients—including high-performing athletes—to maintain normal hip function. The goal is to slow the progression of osteoarthritis and delay or eliminate the need for a total hip joint replacement.
Dr. Farshad Adib is a hip preservation specialist who practices at Nirschl Orthopaedic Center in Arlington, Virginia. Dr. Adib takes special interest in treating hip pain in young adults, and he believes a natural hip joint is preferable to a mechanical hip replacement when possible. He is skilled and experienced in performing several hip preservation techniques, including labral repair, periacetabular osteotomy, hip dysplasia surgery and hip dislocation surgery.
Could You Benefit From Hip Preservation Surgery?
Hip preservation may be a good option for you if you are younger than 60 and have hip pain due to hip impingement, a hip labral tear or hip dysplasia. Hip impingement, or femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), occurs when the ball of the hip joint (femoral head) pinches up against the cup of the hip joint (acetabulum). Some active young people develop extra bone on the ball or socket of their hip joint. During movement, friction occurs between the bones, which can tear the labrum and damage the joint cartilage. In addition to causing pain, excessive wear on the joint can hasten the onset and progression of osteoarthritis.
Hip dysplasia occurs when the socket of the hip joint doesn’t fully cover the ball of the upper leg bone (femoral head). Due to abnormal forces across the hip joint, the condition can lead to arthritis.
