Joint Replacement Performed by Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeons in Arlington, VA
Joint degeneration is very common. The cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones in a joint can break down gradually due to overuse or the natural aging process, or suddenly due to trauma. Either way, the bones may begin to grind painfully against each other during movement, leading to tenderness, stiffness and a loss of mobility. This can lead to the need for a joint replacement surgery.
When Is Joint Replacement Appropriate?
In some cases, nonoperative treatment can be very effective for managing the symptoms of joint degeneration. At Nirschl Orthopaedic Center in Arlington, Virginia, we take a conservative approach to treatment. Prior to suggesting a joint reconstruction procedure, we typically recommend starting with a nonsurgical treatment plan, which may include:
- A weight-loss program (if necessary)
- Activity modifications to reduce stress on the painful joint
- A brace to stabilize and support the degenerated joint
- Regular exercise
- Physical therapy
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Corticosteroid injections
- Viscosupplementation injections
- PRP injections
To address very severe symptoms that do not respond sufficiently to several months of conservative treatment, a joint reconstruction may be considered. This surgical procedure involves the removal of certain parts of an arthritic or otherwise damaged joint. The removed components are then replaced with a durable, low-friction device made of metal, plastic or ceramic (a prosthesis), which is designed to replicate the movement of a normal, healthy joint. The most commonly replaced joints are the hips, knees and ankles; other joints that can be replaced include the shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers.
